The McFadden Series tells the continuing story of a family brought together by
chance, fate, and physical disability.
Bryan and Lauren McFadden are medical professionals in the field of physiotherapy.
They treat patients of all ages who have encountered sports injuries, neurological
disease, chronic illness, spinal cord injury, severe burns, and amputation, to name
just a few conditions. Their world revolves around wheelchairs, exercise equipment,
prosthetics, and the people who use these tools to regain control and independence
over their lives.
As the series begins, an explosive accident gives Dr. McFadden first-hand
experience as a recovering patient and gives her a new awareness of the personal
frustrations and limitations routinely encountered by people with disabilities. She's
returned to her job as Director of Physiotherapy with a new fierce determination to
provide whatever means are necessary to rehabilitate her patients.
But it's 2009, and the entire country is in a recession that's causing not only
elimination of some vital services to patients, but also cutbacks to the staff. A
resistant administration finds her in more than the usual futile battle against
profit-seeking, dictating, organized insurance programs.
Conscience and compassion bring Lauren and her physical therapist husband,
Bryan, to realize that jeopardizing patient care is no longer an option. Additionally,
Lauren will surely lose more than her reputation if she continues to dodge the
health-care system by taking matters into her own hands. But what can she do except
continue to fight the system?
The answer arrives when Bryan finds their ticket to financial freedom.
The McFaddens won't ditch their careers, but instead will seize the opportunity to
build a dream. The result is a whole new concept in rehabilitation when injured
teenagers and young adults find their way into a newly built home that's nothing
short of a luxury resort. But financial security means nothing to kids that have been
abandoned, abused, and rejected at every turn. Aside from healing the medical
wounds and dealing with adolescent attitudes, the McFaddens find it's going to take
a lot more than a program of therapy to restore the lives of these troubled youths.
